The first
modernization works at the Indyjskie Quay in the Port of Gdynia will
start soon. On Wednesday, December 21, at the headquarters of the
Port of Gdynia Authority, a contract for the implementation of the
task was officially signed. Its contractor will be the NDI company,
known for its various hydrotechnical projects in ports.
The more than 500-meter-long Indyjskie Quay, where the Port of Gdynia carries out, among others, transhipments of grain, will gain a new face. During the 22 months of the contract, the quay is to be completely modernized and widened, and the basin itself will be deepened to 15.5 meters, which will allow it to accommodate larger ships. The value of the contract concluded between the Port of Gdynia Authority and the NDI Group amounts to nearly PLN 135 million.
– This agreement is extremely
important to us, because we all know that the Port of Gdynia is
famous for transshipments of grain. It is reloaded in the Indyjskie
Quay, and such a new, deep-water quay gives us full confidence that
we will continue to be the leader when it comes to these goods -
comments Jacek Sadaj, President of the Port of Gdynia Authority SA.
The contractor, NDI Group, is well
known for the implementation of hydrotechnical projects, not only in
in the ports of Gdańsk and Szczecin. Recently, the biggest task
undertaken by the company was the execution of a waterway through the
Vistula Spit. In Gdynia, the company built storage yards and is also
modernizing the Dutch Quay.
– We feel good here, we feel
looked after by the investor, we feel welcome. We are glad that we
are here on another contract - says Małgorzata Winiarek-Gajewska,
president of NDI. – We will rebuild and expand this quay, in fact
renovate it to the so-called today's standards and the current needs
of the port. We will also deepen the port canal. This is to raise the
standard of functioning of this quay, as well as to create new
possibilities for accepting sea transport. We are starting work
almost immediately and we hope that there will be no surprises.
All works on the Indian Quay have
been planned in such a way that the companies using the pier can
continue their operations.
– This requires some flexibility
from the contractor, so that those who operate on land, on the pier,
can simply still earn money. So we have to somehow combine these two
elements – says Kazimierz Koralewski, Vice-President of the Port of
Gdynia. – We are aware that today grain is a key cargo for Poland.
At the same time, we know that without deepening this basin, we will
not be able to increase the transhipment rate, we will not increase
the transshipment potential at the port of Gdynia.
Kazimierz Koralewski also added
that the modernization of the quay is associated with the
modernization of transshipment technology and the increase in storage
space. All this is to make imported cargo, such as fodder, faster to
be unloaded from larger ships and shipped inland, and Polish grain to
be transported more efficiently to the port and loaded on a ship for
export purposes.
In turn, Vice-President of the Port
of Gdynia Authority and Finance Director Maciej Bąk stated that this
is an investment that will pay off quickly.
– I like to spend money in this way, because these are investments that will undoubtedly come back to us in the form of revenues in the years to come. This is another profit center that we are modernizing to bring even greater returns than before – says Bąk.
