The Szczecin and Świnoujście Seaports Authority summed up the transshipment results for the first quarter of this year. These are 13.2 percent better than at the same time last year. Port operators in the period January-March this year handled almost 10 million tons of cargo.
Ports have more coal (+110%), other
bulk cargo (+94.5%), grain (+15.4%), fuels (+42.6%), including LNG (
+41.6 percent) and containers (+4 percent).
Transshipments of ore fell by
almost half compared to the previous year. General cargo is also
slightly down (-6%), including ferry cargo.
The port authority forecasts that
this year's transhipment results should exceed the result achieved in
2022, which was a record in terms of the number of handled cargoes.
Ports achieved a result of nearly 37 million tonnes, thus they were
in the black compared to 2021 by 11 percent.
The Port Authority takes actions
aimed at the constant development of ports, creating conditions and
opportunities to handle more cargo than at present. After the
investment is completed, the port in Szczecin will gain new and
modernized quays in the area of the Kaszubski Basin and the Dębicki
Canal. The ferry terminal in Świnoujście will be adapted to handle
intermodal transport. The LNG terminal is being expanded by building
an additional unloading and loading berth to handle smaller LNG
vessels: gas carriers, bunker vessels and feeders. In turn, thanks to
investments related to the construction of new and modernization of
the existing technical infrastructure, both ports will be more
environmentally friendly. The access infrastructure is also
systematically improving, including roads and railways connecting the
ports with the hinterland.
An undertaking that will have a
positive impact on the economy of the country and the region and will
complement the offer of both ports will certainly be the Deepwater
Container Terminal in Świnoujście and the installation terminal for
servicing offshore wind farms located in the port of Świnoujście.
