The Port of Gdynia, one of the key transport hubs and the largest grain port in the region, confirms its strong position on the market, achieving a solid result of 20.3 million tons of transshipment in the first nine months of 2024.
- The Port of Gdynia once
again shows what its strong point is: stabilization in transshipment
results in demanding economic and political circumstances. The
cooperation we have developed with transshipment terminals and the
long-term development strategy allow us to effectively respond to the
challenges that the market poses to us. We are observing a clear
increase in the transshipment of general cargo, the largest cargo
group in terms of tonnage, which reached 11.9 million tonnes, which
is 108.9% dynamics compared to 2023. Our priority remains to further
strengthen the position of the Port of Gdynia as a key link in the
supply chain, especially in the context of ensuring the country's
energy and food security. Considering the current political
situation, the port also plays an important role in securing
alternative trade routes, which gives us a competitive advantage and
allows for the smooth handling of increasingly larger volumes of
goods - sums up the president of the Port of Gdynia Authority S.A.,
Piotr Gorzeński.
The changes in the general cargo group are indeed significant. Its largest segment is container transshipment, which saw a 14.7% jump in transshipment volume, which translates into an additional 900 thousand tonnes. The main element of this group is also goods transhipped using rolling technology (ro-ro ships and ferries), which can boast a 5.5% increase, i.e. an additional 210 thousand tons. This was contributed to, among others, by the opening of a new ro-ro line to Södertälje, operated by Lakeway Link. In turn, changes related to the decarbonization policy of the European economy are visible in the results of coal and coke transhipments, which amounted to 949.3 thousand tons. In a word: we are returning to the market trends observed before 2022. Grain maintains a high level of transhipment, reaching a result of 4.4 million tons, which confirms the importance of the Port of Gdynia on the map of international trade.
