New locations for Orlen Group's offshore wind farms
Date of publication: 30.05.2023
The Ministry of Infrastructure has announced the results of the process of awarding 6 new wind farm sites planned for the Polish waters of the Baltic Sea. Orlen Group received the highest number of points for 5 locations. As a result, the company's potential in offshore wind energy may soon increase by about 5200 MW.

The concession process assessed, among other things, the project's contribution to national and EU climate goals, experience in implementing energy projects and the possibility of financing them. The concessions secured by the Orlen Group are located in the heights of Kołobrzeg and Łeba and are situated about 30 kilometers from the coastline.

"Orlen Group is the best prepared company in Poland for large-scale investments in the offshore wind industry. This is a result of the experience we have already gained in, among others, the Baltic Power project and the construction of Poland's first installation terminal for offshore wind farms. We will use our competence in the construction of more farms, including on five new concessions we have just secured. The implementation of these investments may increase the Orlen Group's potential in offshore wind power to about 5.8 GW. The planned investments in the Baltic are crucial from the point of view of implementing the business strategy of the multienergy company, but also from the point of view of the energy security of the region," said  Daniel Obajtek, PKN Orlen CEO.

Investments in offshore wind energy are one of the main directions of development of modern energy in Orlen Group. The company's strategy is to obtain about 9 GW of installed RES capacity by 2030. Part of this is to be offshore wind projects, which is why the corporation has applied for 11 location permits. In the end, Orlen Group received the highest number of points for 5 new areas designated for the construction of more offshore wind farms. With the results announced by the Ministry of Infrastructure, the generation potential of the concessions held by Orlen Group will increase by about 5.8 GW.

Orlen Group's experience in the offshore wind energy sector is primarily in the Baltic Power project with Canadian partner Northland Power. This is currently the most advanced offshore wind farm project in Poland. The company has secured contracts for the supply of all key components necessary for the farm. In May 2023, Baltic Power began construction of an onshore infrastructure in the Choczewo Municipality to deliver electricity produced offshore to the national grid. It is also the first investment of its kind in Poland. Work at sea will begin in 2024, and two years later the Baltic Power farm is expected to produce energy to power more than 1.5 million households. The corporation's plans for the development of the offshore wind sector also concern securing and guaranteeing the timely implementation of new projects. Therefore, in October 2022, Orlen Group made a strategic decision to build Poland's first offshore wind farm installation terminal. The investment is being carried out in the port of Świnoujście and is expected to become one of the most modern terminals in Europe upon completion in late 2024 and early 2025. Its wharves and storage yards will allow for the transportation and installation of state-of-the-art wind turbines of 15 MW and larger. The terminal will primarily serve the Baltic Power project, which will also support the handling of other developers' projects and further investments that Orlen Group plans to make in the coming years by securing new licenses.
