With the participation of the public, another launch took place at Karstensen Shipyard Poland. The fishing vessel NB 477 Havfisk descended from the B1 slipway.
This year marks the second launch conducted in this manner at the Gdańsk shipyard and the third since Karstensen's major relocation from Gdynia. Thanks to the change of location and the acquisition of infrastructure, including the B1 slipway and the famous green Kone cranes, the yard has been able to streamline the construction of additional ships. It is worth recalling that the previous launch, although not without problems, took place in March this year. At that time, the fishing vessel NB 476 Høgaberg was launched for a shipowner from the Faroe Islands.
The currently constructed vessel, also intended for fishing, was ordered in March 2022 by Havfisk AS, a subsidiary of Veibust Fiskeriselskap based in Ålesund, Norway. For this shipowner, Karstensen has not only delivered similar ships but also modernized existing ones.
The design of the NB 477 Havfisk, built in the Polish shipyard, was developed by Karstensens Skibsværft A/S. The hull length is 75.10 meters, and the width is 16.20 meters. The displacement reaches 2900 GT. It features a completely watertight cargo deck, and a trawl deck raised one level compared to the usual design of such vessels. This increases the freeboard, which contributes to a safer working environment on deck. Havfisk has the DNV +1A Fishing Vessel E0 Ice-C class, due to its future operational area in the challenging, icy waters of the Norwegian Sea. The vessel's maximum speed is 16 knots, and it will have a crew of 15.
The design work focused on optimizing the new ship's efficiency concerning its operational profile to achieve minimal fuel consumption. Havfisk is equipped with a heat recovery system from all engines, LED lighting, and other measures aimed at minimizing energy consumption, in line with the decarbonization of the maritime industry, including fishing. The main propulsion is provided by a Wärtsilä 8V31 engine with 5200 kW power, along with three Scania DI16 auxiliary engines, each with 600 kW power. Additionally, there are two Brunvoll thrusters with 1400 kW power. The vessel will have a winch and cranes from Karmøy, two FrioNordica cooling units with 1500 kW power, and a C-Flow ventilation system consisting of two tanks and four compressors with 90 kW power. Furthermore, it includes RSW tanks with a capacity of 2425 m3 for transporting caught fish, and tanks for 599 m3 of fuel and 75 m3 of freshwater.
After launching, Havfisk was towed to the quay for further shipyard work. In subsequent stages of construction, the vessel will go to Karsten's Shipyard A/S for finishing works and delivery to the customer. The final handover is expected by the end of this year.
