On Wednesday, May 29, in the presence of Deputy Infrastructure Minister Arkadiusz Marchewka, the Frombork fishing port was officially opened after modernization, which took nearly 2.5 years. The Maritime Office in Gdynia is responsible for the investment.

The fishing port in Frombork has been modernized with funds from the state budget. The work, which began in December 2021, consumed more than 22 million zlotys. With this money, the port basin was enlarged, and the condition of hydrotechnical structures was also improved. Now more vessels can call at the port. The new quays have a higher permissible payload - 20 kN/m2, and are also deeper - 2.5 meters. In addition, wharf equipment has been replaced, the slip has been rebuilt and other elements of technical infrastructure have been taken care of, including connections, lighting and hydrants. Breakwaters have also been reinforced.

The official opening of the port after modernization was attended by Anna Stelmaszyk-Świerczyńska, director of the Maritime Office in Gdynia, Andrzej Malkiewicz, head of the Investment Implementation Department at the Maritime Office in Gdynia, Arkadiusz Marchewka, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Infrastructure, and Damian Krasinski, mayor of Frombork.

As Deputy Minister Arkadiusz Marchewka told Gospodarka Mororska, small ports like Frombork can look for their chances in European funds and attract investments. For this, however, cooperation is needed between the local government - small ports are self-governing - and the government and state administration.

- I think it is necessary to look for such solutions that would allow in the future to increase allocations and investments precisely in those small ports that belong to local governments. A new perspective of EU funds is ahead of us. I think that finding this funding is possible. We need to work well together here, and for our government the local government is simply a partner," said Arkadiusz Marchewka, recalling that the Maritime Office is implementing the deepening of the last section of the waterway on the Elblag River thanks to an agreement between the government and the local government. - Small ports are also important. Usually people talk about the largest ones, which are crucial to the national economy, but after all, the small ones are also important for the local community, both economically and in terms of tourism. The redevelopment of the port in Frombork shows that thanks to such investments, cities located, for example, on the Vistula Lagoon can simply gain a lot.

Anna Stelmaszyk-Świerczyńska, director of the Maritime Office in Gdynia, made no secret of the fact that the office had been thinking about this investment for years. The first design documentation was made about 10 years ago, and for the next few years the office tried to obtain financing.

- The need for renovation was already high. The wharves were in poor condition, the carrying capacity was limited. 5 or 6 years ago, makeshift repairs were made so that the wharves could be used at all. They were low, only for small boats. They clanked, so landings were difficult," says Director Stelmaszyk-Świerczyńska.

The depth of the harbor basin is identical to the depth of the approach track on the Vistula Lagoon and is 2.5 meters. The director of the Maritime Office in Gdynia notes that the port can still be deepened to 3.5 meters, but "this will be done if we can increase the depths on the approach track." He adds that this will be a process of several years.

The reconstruction of the Frombork port is part of the construction of a shipping channel through the Vistula Spit. During the course of the work, the infrastructure ministry assessed that it could ensure the development of smaller towns around the Vistula Lagoon, which can be accessed from the Baltic Sea thanks to the crosscut. The work was carried out by Doraco Construction Corporation.
