The Port of Szczecin has marked a groundbreaking moment in its history. Bulk Cargo-Port Szczecin, the port's largest multipurpose cargo handling operator, has announced a spectacular success, serving as both a testament to the dynamic development of port infrastructure and a gateway to new opportunities for the entire region.
Thanks to the completed modernization of the Chorzowskie Quay, which now reaches an operational depth of 11 meters (previously 9 meters), the port can accommodate significantly larger vessels. This represents a major qualitative leap, not only in terms of ship size but also in the scale of logistics operations that can now be carried out.
"We’ve received the depth clearance for the Chorzowskie Quay. We will be able to handle ships with a draft of up to 11 meters instead of the previous 9 meters. I don’t think I need to explain what that means—the scale, the qualitative transformation we’re about to achieve here," said Adam Czarnul, board member of Bulk Cargo-Port Szczecin, in an interview with GospodarkaMorska.pl.
A perfect example of how quickly the port is capitalizing on its new capabilities is the handling of the largest vessel in its history—Elias, which arrived in Szczecin with an impressive cargo of 41,204 tons of pig iron. This is an absolute record for the port and at the same time a major technological and logistical challenge that the operator managed with excellence.
The Elias is a bulk carrier sailing under the Maltese flag. Built in 2010, it has been serving in the global bulk cargo transport market. It boasts impressive dimensions: an overall length of 189.99 meters and a beam of 32.26 meters.
The new infrastructure enables more efficient handling of various types of bulk cargo, enhancing the international competitiveness of the Port of Szczecin.
"We thank everyone involved in this project at ZMPSiŚ—this is another step in the development of our port and a confirmation that we are ready for even greater challenges and opportunities!" the operator concludes.
The modernization of the Chorzowskie Quay is not only a logistical achievement but also a prime example of strategic thinking about the port's future. Thanks to infrastructure investments, the Port of Szczecin is becoming a modern and reliable link in the global supply chain.
