On Wednesday, September 27, another record was broken at the Baltic Hub container terminal in Gdańsk - the barrier of 20 million TEUs transhipped since the beginning of the terminal's existence was exceeded.
As Baltic Hub reminds on its
website, two years ago the terminal celebrated handling 15 million
TEUs (i.e. 20-foot containers). Another 5 million TEUs was added to
this result within two years, which only confirms the position of the
largest container terminal in the Baltic Sea. The 20-millionth
container was reloaded from the 400-meter Mayview Maersk ocean
vessel. The terminal said that the container itself is also owned by
Maersk.
– This is another milestone in
the development of Baltic Hub and a huge success in the international
arena. We are happy with the result achieved and would like to thank
our clients who consistently choose our services. Each of these 20
million containers handled is a symbol of the trust they have placed
in us. We also cannot forget about the contribution of our employees.
We express our heartfelt appreciation and gratitude to everyone who
contributed to this achievement – said Charles Baker, General
Director of Baltic Hub.
According to Baltic Hub's
estimates, 20 million containers placed one behind the other would
create a road approximately 120,000 km long, i.e. they could circle
the earth around the equator three times.
Of course, the terminal does not
give up on further expansion. The expansion of the T3 terminal is
underway. There will also be a maneuvering and storage yard with an
operational area of 36.5 ha. Once the work is completed, Baltic Hub
will increase its transshipment capacity by 1/3 to 4.5 TEU per year.
