Today, the Szczecin-Świnoujście Seaports Authority signed a preliminary agreement for the construction of a deepwater container terminal in Świnoujście. The partners of the agreement are Belgian company Deme Concessions and Qatari Qterminal. The contract was concluded on one of the quays in the port of Szczecin.
This investment is,
according to Deputy Minister Marek Gróbarczyk, strategic for Poland.
The deepwater container terminal will enable the largest container
ships transiting the Baltic Sea to be unloaded in Świnoujście.
- This is an investment that
will provide a development impulse not only for Świnoujście and
Western Pomerania, but for the entire national economy - emphasizes
Krzysztof Urbaś, president of the Szczecin and Świnoujście
Seaports Authority SA.
The construction of the
approach track and access infrastructure is a multi-year program
financed from the state budget and various sources for the amount of
PLN 10 billion. The Belgians and Qataris will not only build the
terminal, but will also be its operators after construction is
completed.
- The construction of a
deep-water container terminal in Świnoujście is one of the elements
included in the Seaport Development Program until 2023. Its goal is
to consolidate the position of Polish ports in the Baltic Sea basin
and create them as key nodes in global supply chains for Central and
Eastern Europe, said Deputy Minister of Infrastructure Marek
Gróbarczyk.
The terminal is to be built
east of the gas port. Container ships up to 400 meters long and
several smaller ships will be able to call at the port at the same
time. According to estimates, the terminal will handle approximately
1.5 million TEU annually. It would currently be the second largest
container terminal in Poland after Gdańsk DCT. The Deepwater
Terminal in Świnoujście is to be ready at the turn of 2025 and
2026.
