On April 18, a vessel departed from the Port of Gdynia carrying a spectacular cargo—six state-of-the-art Konecranes ASC SWL 40 LT cranes, destined for one of the largest ports on the U.S. East Coast—the Port of Virginia in Norfolk. This shipment is part of a major order placed by the American port as part of the modernization of the Norfolk International Terminals container terminal.

The cranes were assembled at the Port Technical Facility in Gdynia, which has long cooperated with Konecranes on projects for clients around the world. The Gdynia-based technical team played a crucial role in preparing the equipment for safe transport and completed the assembly of the export-bound cranes. The loading operation took several days and took place at the French Quay.

The cranes are being transported aboard the specialized vessel MV Pijlgracht, operated by the shipping company Spliethoff, which specializes in oversized cargo transport. The ship departed Gdynia on April 18, and its journey to Norfolk will take several days.

About the ASC SWL 40 LT Cranes

The cranes being delivered are Automated Stacking Cranes (ASC) with a nominal lifting capacity of 40 tons, intended for container terminal handling operations. Equipped with advanced automation, safety systems, and remote monitoring, they will significantly improve operational efficiency at the Port of Virginia.

This delivery is part of a contract for a total of 36 cranes that Konecranes is supplying to the Port of Virginia in two phases—the first batch is scheduled to be delivered by mid-2025.
